About Us

According to oral history from older members of Mt. Zion and other area churches, the first services of Mount Zion Christian Church were held “under a bush harbor some where on Camp Branch” in 1870, under the leadership of Reverend Brutus Young.  At that time, it was a part of Granville County.

In 1878, Mrs. Mary A. Short of Norfolk, VA sold an acre of land to trustees Louis Hodge, Thomas Fains and Edmond Eaton for the sum of $40.00 The first little wooden church was built on this land on Townsville Road and in 1931 the church name was changed to Mount Zion Congregational Christian Church.  Sometime later, between 1949-50, the second structure made of cinder blocks was erected directly across from the first.  This church faced what is now Highway 39.

In 1954 the members had a well dug and in 1955 new pews were purchased.  In 1957 the church was renamed Mount Zion United Church of Christ.  An extension of two classrooms, a fellowship hall, indoor bathrooms, kitchen and pastor’s study were added to the structure in 1971.  Beautiful stained glass windows were added in 1972 purchased by families in honor or in memory of loved ones.

In 1999, the church family was very blessed when a total of 71.2 acres of land at 911 Morgan Road was purchased from Mr. Allen W.P. Hart.  A ground breaking ceremony was held on June 8, 2003 and construction of the third and present church began

Members of Mount Zion United Church of Christ have been blessed to have seven God fearing leaders that helped us and our forefathers accomplish much.  They were: Rev. Brutus Young, Rev. Edmond Bullock, Rev. Plummer Alexander, Rev. Richard D. Bullock, Jr., Rev. Sheldon B. Carr, Rev. Akeem O. Wright, and our present pastor, Rev. Calvin Brooks, Sr.

Under the leadership of our present and former pastors, we have grown both tangibly and spiritually.  As we strive to do the will of God, may we never forget from whence we came.  We must continue to trust in Him and believe that our future will be richly blessed as our past has been and we can truly say: “WE HAVE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH AND TO GOD BE THE GLORY!”
